Meet Julianno - Operation Entrepreneur boot camp graduate

Sgt. Julianno Scaglione, CD, started his career in 2000 at the age of 17 as a Mobile Support Equipment Operator with the Reserves. After 13 years, he transferred to the Regular Force as a Geomatics Technician. In 2016 he was faced with life changing news that his career would end a lot sooner than expected. “Being released came as a surprise to me. I had to figure out where I was going and how I was going to get there.”

He had built a life around his service, “being a soldier was who I thought I was, so it was hard to comprehend what I would do next,” says Julianno about his experience transitioning.

“You need to plan for this stuff early. Don’t wait until it’s time to transition.”

This is the advice he believes should be shared with young troops right from the beginning. For Julianno, one of the biggest challenges was a perceived loss of identity. “Stepping out of uniform, something you’ve been in since you were a kid, can be a struggle, mentally and emotionally,” explains Julianno. One thing, however, made a difference for him: early planning. “I participated in Prince’s Trust Canada’s Operation Entrepreneur program (OE) in 2015 before I knew I was getting out because I was interested in entrepreneurship.” Without knowing it at the time, this decision would assist in laying the foundation for his next career steps.

During his three-year retention, Julianno would navigate his entrepreneurial journey through the strategic use of resources and networks, including the Operation Entrepreneur program.

“It was difficult figuring out the next steps. Prince’s Trust Canada helped me with that. The mentoring program is especially amazing because it’s so important to have outside opinions to help you shape your business,” says Julianno.

He participated in the program through workshops, networking sessions, the boot camp and the mentorship program. He also had other support systems to help with his transition and business: CannaConnect Corporation, DJ Leblanc Consulting, Hunt for Heroes, The Treble Victor Group and the Nova Scotia Fitness Association. “Having a support system is the most integral part of transitioning.”

Through entrepreneurship, Julianno has found a new purpose. He is the owner-operator of My Own Path, Health and Wellness Inc. which sells dietary supplements and conducts personal training and corrective exercise. My Own Path aims to help build a strong resilient community through health, fitness, emotional and mental wellbeing.
